Genesis 1: 14-19 (NRSVA)

14 And God said, ‘Let there be lights in the dome of the sky to separate the day from the night; and let them be for signs and for seasons and for days and years, 15 and let them be lights in the dome of the sky to give light upon the earth.’ And it was so. 16 God made the two great lights—the greater light to rule the day and the lesser light to rule the night—and the stars. 17 God set them in the dome of the sky to give light upon the earth, 18 to rule over the day and over the night, and to separate the light from the darkness. And God saw that it was good. 19 And there was evening and there was morning, the fourth day.

“NO, GRANNY LAURA!” wailed my grandson like a wild mini banshee. “No, I’m not sleeping, THE SKY IS LIGHT!” It was early afternoon and I had an exhausted, overwrought, over stimulated toddler to contend with. He was surly. He was angry. He was rude. He desperately needed a nap. Desperately! He needed time to reset his little mind and body. But he was refusing to sleep. It wasn’t dark. The sky was light and that meant it was time to be awake.

God was so good to his creation, all of his creation, when he separated night and day. Our loving God created a marked time and space for rest. Rest for our bodies, minds and souls. If it was constant light how many of us would end up like frazzled, over emotional toddlers, trying to keep working, keep doing? As it is many of us work into the night, many of us find we cannot rest as our minds are filled with worry. To fully rest and rejuvenate our mind, body and souls we have to lay these burdens down. I encourage you to create an evening routine, where you spend time with the Lord telling him about your day, handing over your worries and troubles, trusting him to take care of them and you. In doing so we prepare ourselves for a restorative night’s sleep helping us to wake up to a new morning fresh, alive and ready to begin again.

PRAYER:

God of all creation,

Help me to see the blessings of the night and the day.

Help me to see that a positive, fresh morning outlook comes from a refreshing night’s rest.

Help me to build routines and habits that create balance within my life

Amen
