Psalm 85

1 Lord, you were favourable to your land;
    you restored the fortunes of Jacob.
2 You forgave the iniquity of your people;
    you pardoned all their sin. Selah

8 Let me hear what God the Lord will speak,
    for he will speak peace to his people,
    to his faithful, to those who turn to him in their hearts.
9 Surely his salvation is at hand for those who fear him,
    that his glory may dwell in our land.

10 Steadfast love and faithfulness will meet;
    righteousness and peace will kiss each other.
11 Faithfulness will spring up from the ground,
    and righteousness will look down from the sky.
12 The Lord will give what is good,
    and our land will yield its increase.
13 Righteousness will go before him,
    and will make a path for his steps.

We take a moment with CrossReach in the second of a weekly series through December. Read part one here.

In the busyness of Advent, it can be difficult to take the time to reflect on what we read in the scriptures and what it means for our lives in our society and community today. Recently someone said that “Righteousness is a gift from God”, and that stopped me, and got me thinking about what that would mean for us in our reading of Psalm 85, especially the phrase: “righteousness and peace will kiss each other.”

Within CrossReach (the Church of Scotland’s Social Care Council) staff support and care for people of every age – from the cradle to the grave essentially. Some who are not able to look after themselves, some who have no family, some who for a variety of reasons and lifestyle choices require support. They are supported by CrossReach staff on a daily basis taking the time to care, without judging, and without reservation. Righteousness and peace go hand in hand, a gift from God to give peace to all. The kiss - is the care that joins the two together.

Heavenly Lord, in the busyness of Advent, and this time of waiting, help us we pray, to find the time to stop, to take a moment or two, to reflect on not only our own lives and the choices we make, but how as Christians we are called to proclaim your peace in our community and society, to bring together righteousness and peace in our lives through caring for others, in Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.
