Psalm 23:2-3a (NRSVA)

2     He makes me lie down in green pastures;
he leads me beside still waters;
3a     he restores my soul.

There are fewer things more frustrating than trying to get a tired child to sleep. They are so tired they do not want to do anything, not even sleep. We know it will help them (and us!) immeasurably if they would but shut their eyes and drift off. Only, we cannot explain that to them. We can only respond to their struggles and do our best to create the conditions for slumber. I wonder how often God, metaphorically, walks the hallways trying to get us to rest?

PRAYER:

Why can’t I stop, good Lord?

Why must I keep so busy?

Things are constantly coming at me,

forever demanding my attention,

my energy,

my soul.

I am tired.

You are the God of sabbath rest.

You make resting,

delighting in just being,

not only necessary but sacred.

May I hear this call, this command,

just as loudly as I hear all the others,

and may I know your tender embrace

as I Iet go and be still, AMEN.

LENT FOCUS 4: PASTURE

This week our focus is ‘pasture’. See if you can find time each day this week to read Psalm 23 and reflect on the imagery it contains. Consider what verses you will carry with you for the rest of the day. You could even try memorising some or all of the verses.
