Hosea 2: 16-23 (NRSV)

16 On that day, says the Lord, you will call me, “My husband,” and no longer will you call me, “My Baal.” 17 For I will remove the names of the Baals from her mouth, and they shall be mentioned by name no more. 18 I will make for you a covenant on that day with the wild animals, the birds of the air, and the creeping things of the ground; and I will abolish the bow, the sword, and war from the land; and I will make you lie down in safety. 19 And I will take you for my wife forever; I will take you for my wife in righteousness and in justice, in steadfast love, and in mercy. 20 I will take you for my wife in faithfulness; and you shall know the Lord.

21 On that day I will answer, says the Lord,
    I will answer the heavens
    and they shall answer the earth;
22 and the earth shall answer the grain, the wine, and the oil,
    and they shall answer Jezreel;
23     and I will sow him for myself in the land.
And I will have pity on Lo-ruhamah,
    and I will say to Lo-ammi, “You are my people”;
    and he shall say, “You are my God.”

As we read these words of the Lord, spoken through the mouth of the Prophet Hosea, it is easy to be filled with a mixture of both hope and fear. The Prophet is giving voice to some day in the future, the Day of the Lord, when God will come and make everything alright.

As we hear of that day the questions come — “When?”

If you look into the world and see all the hurt and suffering it is easy to be overwhelmed and wonder when will God come and fix everything. It maybe feels obvious that if God would come back and fix it then everything would be okay.

But the difficult answer to the question of when is — “NOW!”

As Christ was foretold, born, lived, was killed and resurrected we were equipped and invited to be co-creators with God. So the question of “When?” as we look to God is turned back to us with God asking “When?”

If you look into the world, near or far, and see something you can do, big or small, to make the world a more hopeful, just and loving place, ask yourself the question “When?”

When am I going to seek the power of the Holy Spirit, asking her for guidance, and be God’s hands and feet in the world?

PRAYER:

God
When I ask — “When?”
Show me your presence in acts of
Hope, justice and love.
So that I might know that “When” is now.
And help me respond to that question
With hope, justice and love
So your presence is known now.
Amen.
