A prayer of organising, sorting, inventory and taking stock

Listen to this daily worship
Luke 14: 28-30 (NRSVA)
28 For which of you, intending to build a tower, does not first sit down and estimate the cost, to see whether he has enough to complete it? 29 Otherwise, when he has laid a foundation and is not able to finish, all who see it will begin to ridicule him, 30 saying, “This fellow began to build and was not able to finish.”
In our reading today Jesus is advising us not to overextend ourselves. Here in these verses he is suggesting we need to have a strategy for living.
I mentioned to you yesterday about the TV show ‘Sort Your Life Out’. It actually has two parts to it. The clearing out and then the sorting out and re-organising of the things coming back into the home. The philosophy is simple. Everything should have its own place in your home. If something new comes in perhaps something else should go out.
It’s a philosophy that we should all consider when it comes to organising our time. We can’t do everything. We need to recognise the time slots in our lives and what it is that we want to put in these slots. Making time for the urgent things always works at the expense of the important things. The important things are seldom urgent, and believe it or not the urgent things are seldom important. I think what Jesus is saying is make time to finish the important things in your life.
PRAYER:
Lord
It’s so easy to say ‘yes’
It is such a positive word
I don’t like the word ‘no’
The trouble is
Trying to build
My life on yes’s
Is impossible
I now realise I can’t build
A yes tower on ‘yes’ alone
The ‘no’s’ are like the links
That hold the next yes together
And when I pray
And you answer
With a No
I’m beginning to understand
That ‘No’ might just be the link
To my next place of service
Give me the wisdom to Know
When to say No
And when to say Yes
In order that I can
Make space to attend
To the important things.
