Overwhelmed with Wonder

February 20, 2013 0 0

Psalm 8

Lord, our Lord,
how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory
in the heavens.

Through the praise of children and infants
you have established a stronghold against your enemies,
to silence the foe and the avenger.

When I consider your heavens,
 the work of your fingers,
the moon and the stars,
which you have set in place,

what is mankind that you are mindful of them,
human beings that you care for them?

You have made them a little lower than the angels
and crowned them with glory and honour.

You made them rulers over the works of your hands;
you put everything under their feet:

all flocks and herds,
and the animals of the wild,

the birds in the sky,
and the fish in the sea,
all that swim the paths of the seas.

Lord, our Lord,
how majestic is your name in all the earth!

O God, we look at your world and at the heavens and like the psalmist we are overwhelmed with wonder. We are so small, our lives so short in a universe that is billions of years old. We wonder at your love for us that we see lived out in Jesus, the Son of Man. And yet you have given us responsibility for all that you have made; not only to understand it and develop it, but also to care for it, to protect it, and to hand it on to our children’s children. Do not let us get above ourselves. Deliver us from pride, save us from greed and foolishness and give us wisdom to live truly through Jesus, the true human being. Amen.
