Psalm 98: 4-6 (NIVUK)

Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth,
    burst into jubilant song with music;

make music to the Lord with the harp,
with the harp and the sound of singing,

with trumpets and the blast of the ram’s horn –
shout for joy before the Lord, the King.

My father-in-law loved to play games at Christmas and a favourite of mine was ‘Guess that tune’ played on a toy plastic whistle. You know the kind with the slider that goes up and down with no specific notes – just noise? Trying playing Good, King Wenceslas on one of them so others can recognise it – no mean feat! But the harp and trumpets, or a ram’s horn (known as the shofar), are not instruments I have ever played – yet! Does that mean I can’t do what this psalm says? That because it says make music with the harp that it can only be the harp I make music to God with?

Of course not!

However, there are instruments set aside for specific purposes in the ancient days, like the shofar. It was and is sounded on special holy days that we can read about in Numbers, and it is used to inspire the people to return to God and herald an exciting and specific event. It is a unique sound that can be like a deep cry of the soul to God.

Does this mean the shofar is the only instrument capable of crying out to God from the depths of our souls?

Of course not!

With every breath that is in you, praise the Lord! Whatever instrument you have let it express the depths of your soul to God. Sometimes others will understand what you are saying and sometimes they won’t, but in the context of a private prayer life and daily worship, what matters is our praise to God and that He understands it.

I can assure you whatever noise of praise you make to God today, He will understand it. Have the freedom to praise our incredible God for He has done marvellous things!

He even made lowly straw as a bed for His son, the Prince of Peace. Just imagine what God makes of you – and we are so much more than straw!

What a God of love!

Prayer:

Lord of Love

Outpourings of praise and worship I give to you just now

Rejoicing in who you are is my delight

Daily, I burst into praise because you love me and you love me being close to you.

Amen
