1 Corinthians 13:4, Proverbs 16:18 (NIVUK)

(1 Corinthians 13) 4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.

(Proverbs 16) 18 Pride goes before destruction,
a haughty spirit before a fall.

Love is not conceited or proud. We don’t need to set ourselves up against anyone else. Many of us will remember from when we were wee, being told to know our place and not to get above ourselves. Pride goeth before a fall, so watch your step!

We can take this literally – we all know someone who is too proud to use a stick or other walking aid. In town the other day, with my trusty shopping trolley (bright shiny red, and much admired – am I boasting?) I had a conversation with a lady who is, I know, a few years older than I am. ‘Oh, I wouldn’t have one of those’, said she. ‘I’d feel old’. Thanks, Jean.

Personally, I’m happy to be kept upright and not carry heavy bags.

Now am I boasting that I am not proud?

A trivial example again, but isn’t life full of them, just waiting to teach us some lesson!

And didn’t Jesus put over his message by telling parables, illustrations from the banal details of ordinary life.

PRAYER:

Loving God,

God of the love that does not have to take up attitudes

or make grand statements,

teach us to love ourselves and others,

giving proper respect and worth to all your people.
