Love takes no pleasure seeing others fail or overcome with temptation

Listen to this daily worship

1 Corinthians 13:6, Proverbs 24:17 (NIVUK)

(1 Corinthians 13) 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.

(Proverbs 24) 17 Do not gloat when your enemy falls;
    when they stumble, do not let your heart rejoice,

So I am not boastful or proud. I’m not rude or self-seeking. I don’t lose my temper and I don’t bear grudges.

So am I like Mary Poppins, practically perfect in every way?

And if I am so smug, am I guilty of Schadenfreude, that wonderful German word which encompasses the dozen or so words we need in today’s English title?

All week we have looked at what love isn’t and doesn’t, but seven negatives don’t make a positive.

Whatever I do, or say, or am, I need to be so full of love that there is no room for anything else.

The greatest thing is love.

PRAYER:

Loving God,

God of the love which cancels all the negatives,

transcends everything,

is indeed the greatest thing,

teach us to love ourselves and others,

giving proper respect and worth to all your people.
