Lord Jesus, come live in our family’s story

Luke 10: 40-42

But Martha was distracted with much serving, and she approached Him and said, “Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Therefore tell her to help me.”

41 And Jesus answered and said to her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things. 42 But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her.”

The influence of Jesus upon the family at Bethany was immense. He was  like a second brother to Martha and Mary. Lazarus their brother  had no cause to be jealous. Jesus turned his life around in a dramatic encounter.

Often in  our families we are too quick to see each other’s faults and slow to pay each other a compliment. Allow today’s reading to help you think about your family and the areas of tension. Are you willing to become the servant in order to bring Jesus into your family life?

Father God
Thank you for our families
For the gift of brothers and sisters
For the bonds of family life
Forgive us when we take each other for granted
When we overlook and undermine each other
When we speak out of turn
When we squabble about meaningless things
When we compete against each other
Like children looking for our mother’s attention
When we think we can say what we like because we’re family

Forgive us for all the hurt we have caused each other
Open our eyes to see the brother who is no longer a child
Control our tongues to listen and respect the choices of a sister
Give us grace to listen and learn from each other
Give us the strength and the courage to pay each other compliments

Father,
Help us to learn from Jesus our brother
Teach me how to change
Show me how to become the servant brother
Give me the grace to wear the apron
To serve the family and ask for nothing in return
Lord Jesus come live in our family story
