Living epistles

1Peter 2:20-24

"But even if you should suffer for righteousness’ sake, you are blessed. “And do not be afraid of their threats, nor be troubled.” But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts, and always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear."

In our scripture reading today we are reminded to always be ready to share with others the reasons why we have found the story of the Gospel compelling and life changing. For many depending on their postcode, to do so will mean they will face harassment, arrest, torture and even death. Yet  in over 40 countries around the world where it is illegal to be a Christian the Gospel is being shared and many are finding faith in Jesus Christ.

In a rapidly changing western world where faith conversations can be misinterpreted and even misunderstood, let us not be afraid to give the reason why we follow Jesus, but in such a manner that it is winsome and not over bearing.

Prayer

Lord,
Today we pray alongside all who suffer at the hands of tormentors
We remember those who refuse to hate
Sustain those who continue to speak for justice
Embolden your children everywhere
To answer wisely those who ask questions
Empower us with your Spirit
Turn hearts of hate away from revenge
Turn loving disciples into living epistles
So that all who profess your name
Might not simply speak the word
But live it
