It is when you’re feeling strong that you are weak

Luke 4:13

When the devil had finished all this tempting, he left him until an opportune time.

Psalm 119:11

I have hidden your word in my heart
that I might not sin against you.

2 Corinthians 12:10

That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.

I remember years ago reading Willie Barclay’s ‘Daily Bible Reading Notes’. He was commenting on the danger of complacency when it comes to temptation. Barclay pointed out how the Greek City of Sardis was conquered by Cyrus of Persia. The city believed it was invincible except from its southern approach. So they guarded the weakest area and neglected what they thought was impenetrable. Cyrus overran the city through a weakened area of the city wall that was thought impossible to breakthrough. The point Barclay made was never be complacent as a Christian. The areas of your life where you think you’ll never fall for temptation guard the most. That is where you will find yourself the most vulnerable.

In our reading today learning from the experience of Jesus, temptation will not last for ever, however the tempter always waits for the most opportune moment to begin all over again.

Lord,

It seems we are never free from temptation

Just when we think we’re safe

We are at our most vulnerable

When we feel secure

Evil tries to defeat us

When we feel strong

Evil is looking for the weakness in our strength

Lord keep us vigilant

May we never be complacent

When temptation comes calling

May your Word hidden deep within us

Come to the surface

Giving us a renewed perspective

So that we do not sin against you
