Genesis 9: 12–17 (NIVUK)

12 And God said, ‘This is the sign of the covenant I am making between me and you and every living creature with you, a covenant for all generations to come: 13 I have set my rainbow in the clouds, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth. 14 Whenever I bring clouds over the earth and the rainbow appears in the clouds, 15 I will remember my covenant between me and you and all living creatures of every kind. Never again will the waters become a flood to destroy all life. 16 Whenever the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and all living creatures of every kind on the earth.’

17 So God said to Noah, ‘This is the sign of the covenant I have established between me and all life on the earth.’

So when we feel overwhelmed by all that is going on in the world—when figures like Geoffrey Hinton, often referred to as the "Godfather of AI," state that a 10% chance is "not unreasonable" for artificial intelligence to wipe out humanity within the next decade—it’s not unreasonable for us to feel a sense of horror and hopelessness for the up-and-coming generations.

Yet, take heart because the ancient teachings found in Genesis are once again being looked to by theologians and philosophers searching for meaning and hope. It’s interesting how the story of "The Fall of Humanity" and the impending AI crisis is being linked with the ancient desire of the human heart to be as gods, emerges once more. As humans try to reach for the stars and talk of their own godlike creativity, others talk of the need for a safety switch so that AI can be controlled, allowing hope to return for future generations.

Our reading today tells us God has already created a switch to protect humanity. In the Torah, it is known as the everlasting covenant between God and all living creatures. God will never again allow all life to be destroyed. Instead, there is a hope that God is beginning to create a new world order—a new humanity found in the person of Jesus. So let’s remember the rainbow with all its vibrancy, reminding us there is a vibrancy within the human heart, a God-given promise that will never be overturned, even by the machines we have created. For nothing can separate us from the love and care of God. The vibrancy and power of the covenant is displayed in a rainbow in the sky. So let’s not be discouraged—instead, let’s rejoice in the rainbow — but look beyond the rainbow to the promise it contains.

Personal Reflection: How can we hold on to this truth while also actively seeking to resist evil influences in the world?

Prayer:

Thank you, Father God;

thank you that nothing can separate us from your love.

No power on earth or beyond the earth,

no influence created by human beings,

no algorithms, no rogue technology, no weapons, no drones,

nothing in all creation can separate us from your love and your intentional will.

Everything you have ever planned will accomplish all it has been set out to do.

Thank you that this means my future is always safe in your love.
