Psalm 112 (NIV-UK)

Praise the Lord.

Blessed are those who fear the Lord,
    who find great delight in his commands.

Their children will be mighty in the land;
    the generation of the upright will be blessed.

Wealth and riches are in their houses,
    and their righteousness endures forever.

Even in darkness light dawns for the upright,
    for those who are gracious and compassionate and righteous.

Good will come to those who are generous and lend freely,
    who conduct their affairs with justice.

Surely the righteous will never be shaken;
    they will be remembered forever.

They will have no fear of bad news;
    their hearts are steadfast, trusting in the Lord.

Their hearts are secure, they will have no fear;
    in the end they will look in triumph on their foes.

They have freely scattered their gifts to the poor,
    their righteousness endures forever;
    their horn will be lifted high in honor.

10

The wicked will see and be vexed,
    they will gnash their teeth and waste away;
    the longings of the wicked will come to nothing.

Yesterday's Old Testament passage was something of a rebuke, sending us on our journey with a sting at our heels. Today Psalm 112 feels more like someone has come alongside us and walks the road calmly and persuasively. Both, though, have a similar message from God at their heart: your journey to being salt and light is now, give what you can, even if it isn’t a lot, the world and your heart will be better for it.

We have grown up in a society driven by consumerism, we are taught to hold on to things, collect, store and hoard things. And this doesn’t just extend to physical things. We do this with money and time, we do this with our God given gifts, and oftentimes we don’t even know we are doing it.

So how about today, as we walk calmly along our path we try and change our perspective.

Join me in a thought experiment, I’m not asking you to revolutionise your life overnight but, just to try and imagine what would happen if you gradually gave everything you could:

Where would you give time if you could?

Where would you give your spiritual gifts: your listening ear, your hard earned wisdom, your valuable help and your ability for mercy?

Where would you donate your spare pennies, pounds and more?

As we wander calmly through our imagination, tell me: whose life would be improved?

How might the world shift, just a touch, towards goodness and God’s love?

How would you be changed if this was the new you?

It’s an interesting thought isn't it.

As you walk with Sanctuary First and God this week let those questions continue in your imagination. Perhaps God will plant a message in your heart.

Prayer:

Dear God

You sent Jesus down to show us what generosity can look like

Help us to learn from your inspiration and his example

Send your Holy Spirit to guide us as we imagine how we might change

Thank you that all of you loves us so much.

Amen
