Finding room for peace
Listen to this daily worship
Psalm 72: 1-7, 18-19 (NIVUK)
1
Endow the king with your justice, O God,
the royal son with your righteousness.2
May he judge your people in righteousness,
your afflicted ones with justice.3
May the mountains bring prosperity to the people,
the hills the fruit of righteousness.4
May he defend the afflicted among the people
and save the children of the needy;
may he crush the oppressor.5
May he endure[a] as long as the sun,
as long as the moon, through all generations.6
May he be like rain falling on a mown field,
like showers watering the earth.7
In his days may the righteous flourish
and prosperity abound till the moon is no more.
18
Praise be to the Lord God, the God of Israel,
who alone does marvellous deeds.19
Praise be to his glorious name for ever;
may the whole earth be filled with his glory.
Amen and Amen.
This Advent at Sanctuary First our theme is ‘Room at the Table’ as we unpack the life-changing, world-changing implications of God’s open invitation. All are welcome, room can be found for everyone. There is enough space. There is enough. God’s love knows no bounds.
At God’s table we find peace and righteousness, the two — as our reading demonstrates — are inextricably linked. Is peace really peace without right and just foundations? Or is it just the absence of obvious conflict?
Is righteousness really just if it leaves lives and lands riven by conflict, despair and pain? Or is it just a tolerable status quo?
Who are the poor and vulnerable who are trying to find room this Advent? Who is God calling you to? This very day.
How can room be found for the vulnerable, the oppressed, the displaced and the victimised this winter? This very day.
Is there anything you can do to find room for peace in your town? This very day.
Prayer:
This very day
we ask you to lead us to
righteousness and peace,
peace and righteousness.
Amen.
