John 14: 1-7 (NIV-UK)

1 ‘Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. 2 My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. 4 You know the way to the place where I am going.’

5 Thomas said to him, ‘Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?’

6 Jesus answered, ‘I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 7 If you really know me, you will know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.’

As we meet with Jesus on the highways and the byways, the comings and goings of our lives, he always offers us shelter. Jesus is there with a folding table, assuring us there is always room at his table — indeed there are many rooms waiting for us up ahead. We will not clock up the miles only to see a ‘No Vacancy’ sign.

Simply, Jesus is The Way. With the guidance of the Holy Spirit, the Bible, and the wisdom of one another; we imperfectly but lovingly discern that way and follow it, best we can. Not because it is easy, not because it is profitable, not because it grants us status or plaudits, not to gain power or influence. But because it’s The Way.

‘The Good Life’ is not easy but it’s honest. It can be demanding, backbreaking and hard — but it’s always rewarding. Other easier lives start very wide, on very level ground but the end point keeps disappearing on the horizon. The road turns out not to be honest, the waypoints shifting and changing as we never ‘arrive’ and end up doubling back again and again.

So how do we keep to the The Way? By following Christ’s example of love and compassion when it’s hard and when it’s easy — and sometimes (as Olivia Dean sings) “It’s so easy”.

Prayer:

Dear God

Place us at ease with ourselves and our world

when our weary souls needs the grace

the glimmer up ahead.

And ruffle us and rouse us,

when our lazy bones need the kick

of the harder climbs

the steeper ascents

Amen.
