Psalm 148 (NIVUK)

Praise the Lord.

Praise the Lord from the heavens;
    praise him in the heights above.

Praise him, all his angels;
    praise him, all his heavenly hosts.

Praise him, sun and moon;
    praise him, all you shining stars.

Praise him, you highest heavens
    and you waters above the skies.

Let them praise the name of the Lord,
    for at his command they were created,

and he established them for ever and ever –
    he issued a decree that will never pass away.

Praise the Lord from the earth,
    you great sea creatures and all ocean depths,

lightning and hail, snow and clouds,
    stormy winds that do his bidding,

you mountains and all hills,
    fruit trees and all cedars,

10

wild animals and all cattle,
    small creatures and flying birds,

11

kings of the earth and all nations,
    you princes and all rulers on earth,

12

young men and women,
    old men and children.

13

Let them praise the name of the Lord,
    for his name alone is exalted;
    his splendour is above the earth and the heavens.

14

And he has raised up for his people a horn,
    the praise of all his faithful servants,
    of Israel, the people close to his heart.

Praise the Lord.

What a glorious Psalm of praise! All of creation, from the heavens above to the earth beneath, is called to praise the Lord. Praise is in abundance!

What is it that leads to praise? Pure love! When you love someone, praise comes naturally. “How well you look today. That colour suits you”.

All of creation unites in praise, because the created loves the Creator.

Sky, sun, moon, stars, sea, snow and clouds, lightning and storms, hills and trees, animals and birds all “praise the Lord.” And towards the end of this lengthy list comes people! Young and old, all are summoned to praise God.

As we look at a stunning sunset, we are amazed at its beauty. God crafts the woodlands and the hillsides in splendour. His handiwork never ceases telling of his greatness, and it is all around us every single day.

He can take a forest ravaged by wildfire and in just a few short years paint it with foliage that is breathtaking. No matter how big a mess our lives may have become at times, when we are redeemed by Jesus, He can fill us with a beauty that will amaze others.

Everything that exists can be tuned to give praise to God — not only religious things but all things. Therefore, you may praise God at work, at home, at leisure and recreation. All that we do, we can turn into a work of art to praise God! There is room enough for all, without exception, at the table of praise of our Creator.

Prayer:

O Lord God, giver of life and all good things, You have blessed me in more ways than I can count. It is so easy to take it all for granted. Rescue me from the temptation to a wasteful, unequal lifestyle. Let me pledge myself to embrace and rediscover your vivid, vibrant creation as a partner and not a source of plunder. Help me to declare my thankfulness and praise by sharing with the world what you have given to me. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
