Thirsting in the desert
Listen to this daily worship
Psalm 63 (NIV)
1 You, God, are my God,
earnestly I seek you;
I thirst for you,
my whole being longs for you,
in a dry and parched land
where there is no water.2 I have seen you in the sanctuary
and beheld your power and your glory.
3 Because your love is better than life,
my lips will glorify you.
4 I will praise you as long as I live,
and in your name I will lift up my hands.
5 I will be fully satisfied as with the richest of foods;
with singing lips my mouth will praise you.6 On my bed I remember you;
I think of you through the watches of the night.
7 Because you are my help,
I sing in the shadow of your wings.
8 I cling to you;
your right hand upholds me.9 Those who want to kill me will be destroyed;
they will go down to the depths of the earth.
10 They will be given over to the sword
and become food for jackals.11 But the king will rejoice in God;
all who swear by God will glory in him,
while the mouths of liars will be silenced.
Aren’t the psalms wonderful? I love their brutal honesty, but also their hope. We all go through times of trial where God feels far off, but when we turn to the psalms, it’s good to know we’re not alone in feeling this way!
Psalm 63 reads like the honest cry of someone who knows what it feels like to be spiritually thirsty, and that makes it incredibly relatable. The psalmist’s longing for God isn’t distant or formal — it’s personal, almost like reaching for someone you deeply love and trust. There’s this beautiful mix of desperation and confidence: a heart that aches for God’s presence but also remembers His faithfulness with gratitude. It reminds me that seeking God isn’t about having everything together; it’s about turning to Him in the dry, weary moments and discovering that His love really is better than anything else we chase.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father,
Thank you for the psalms, especially in the dry and weary moments of life. Teach us to seek You with that same honest hunger, trusting that Your love is better than anything else we chase. When our hearts feel tired or distracted, draw us back to Your presence and fill us with the joy, strength, and peace that come from knowing You. Help us remember Your faithfulness and cling to You with confidence, knowing You hold us close.
Amen.
