2 Timothy 1: 6-7 (NIV-UK)

6 For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands. 7 For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.

Despite what I read in today’s reading from Timothy, I sometimes feel timid. Despite a lifetime of being reassured that God has given me gifts to use, I feel timid in the face of the journey ahead of me, in the face of missions I might encounter as I try to be my own little bit of salt and light in a sometimes very dark world.

Do you feel that sometimes? I think perhaps it is human to feel it, otherwise why would we need so many pages of the Bible to encourage us.

But this is where I try to remember that it’s not just me heading out on this journey. I have a passenger and a guide. The Spirit lives inside me waiting to help and heal and strengthen me. Waiting to show me new gifts and missions I haven’t yet discovered. And God is in every step I take, in the earth, in the sky, in the trees and plants and animals I pass. Watching me with love and joy and hope.

You see, no matter how timid I feel on occasion, the flame of God’s gifts within me aren’t timid. All they need is a little fanning as I walk, and though I am not the strongest, God still wants me, so I think I can manage that.

Prayer:

Dear God

You are beyond my knowledge and yet you want me to help you

Thank you for your presence in the world around me

Thank you for the Spirit who strengthens and teaches us

Send us all on our way with your love and guidance we pray

Amen
