Galatians 6: 1-6 (NIV-UK)

6 Brothers and sisters, if someone is caught in a sin, you who live by the Spirit should restore that person gently. But watch yourselves, or you also may be tempted. 2 Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ. 3 If anyone thinks they are something when they are not, they deceive themselves. 4 Each one should test their own actions. Then they can take pride in themselves alone, without comparing themselves to someone else, 5 for each one should carry their own load. 6 Nevertheless, the one who receives instruction in the word should share all good things with their instructor.”

I love how Paul, when he writes this letter to the Church in the city of Galatia, reminds the followers there and, indeed us, of a very powerful truth: The Christian walk of faith is never an isolated, independent stride, but a collective advancement towards the common good and a desirable outcome. Come to think of it, isn’t it a little bit like team sports? We often hear of a star striker, the upcoming favourite that will most certainly dominate the game - but all too often, even though they may receive all of the attention, if it wasn’t for the team as a whole or for all the people that work behind the scenes, it would prove very difficult for all those who have built up the team’s successes to even glimpse at holding onto the medal or trophy. Imagine that as we are about to put on our jerseys for a match, Christ the coach comes over to us and gives us a pep talk. He reminds us that if we work collectively and strategically, then the team are in for some good chances to achieve great things.

But, as the halftime pep talk comes around, Christ the coach highlights the areas where some players need some extra support from others and where the team dynamics would be at stake, where some players are ‘hogging the ball’ and ‘only seeing where they wish to take charge’. How do we react when God highlights to us where we need to ‘carry the load’ or to ‘make passes happen’? Maybe that one time when you give a hand to lift someone who has recently fallen with an injury might enable them to create a chance for them to score an absolutely glorious goal. As God reminds us of where we can play an integral role to others, let us step back onto the pitch at halftime and truly witness how God can use us to build each other up and to share in the victory of his kingdom together.

Prayer:

Lord, you have made us into a team. When we can work together, excitement can happen. When someone falls down or needs encouragement, you call us to sit beside them and give them that encouragement. Help us work as the team you wish to draw together and play together. Send us back out onto the pitch so we can show what it means to have Christ as our captain and at the centre of the team. Amen.
