Listen to this daily worship

Psalm 50: 7-15 (NIV-UK)

‘Listen, my people, and I will speak;
I will testify against you, Israel:
    I am God, your God.

I bring no charges against you concerning your sacrifices
or concerning your burnt offerings, which are ever before me.

I have no need of a bull from your stall
or of goats from your pens,

10

for every animal of the forest is mine,
and the cattle on a thousand hills.

11

I know every bird in the mountains,
and the insects in the fields are mine.

12

If I were hungry I would not tell you,
for the world is mine, and all that is in it.

13

Do I eat the flesh of bulls
or drink the blood of goats?

14

‘Sacrifice thank-offerings to God,
fulfil your vows to the Most High,

15

and call on me in the day of trouble;
I will deliver you, and you will honour me.’

God is not hungry!

God doesn’t need a Deliveroo.

God doesn’t want chips with that.

Jesus is hungry!

You can feed him

by giving food

without qualification

and without judgement

to anyone who needs it.

Jesus waits, in the hunger of the hungry

his stomach aching

and he is fed when we break bread

further and wider

than we thought we could.

But God…

God is not hungry!

We cannot fill God.

We cannot buy God.

We can’t barter with God.

We cannot control God.

We cannot fill God so that he goes away to bother someone else.

So why do we try?

Why do we try to feed God and

meanwhile leave Jesus hungry?

Why do we try to give enough so we don’t have to do anything?

And why do we try to do enough so that we don’t have to give anything?

Jesus is hungry.

God is not.

Prayer:

Guide us to share our resources

generously and openly

to gladden hearts

mend spirits

and restore bodies.

Challenge us Lord not to accept the profound inequalities of our world.

Amen.
