Ephesians 4: 1-6 (NIV-UK)

4 As a prisoner for the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received. 2 Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. 3 Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. 4 There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to one hope when you were called; 5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism; 6 one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.”

You can imagine that nearly every coach of a team would always say to someone who is on the top of their own radar: “You will be a great asset for the team”. The coach already knows the strengths and contributions of each individual player and how the chemistry works with each player on the pitch. They don’t choose you all just because you are the best player; nine times out of ten, they are also looking to see if you can work well with the squad as a whole.

Paul, when he writes this letter to the church in Ephesus, is already observing fractures and misalignments in the body of Christ. He wants to encourage everyone to work for a Spirit of Unity - that unstoppable force where everyone acknowledges each other’s giftings and that they are using it to build up the squad as a whole, not just for their own individual merit. Christ gives us space to discover where our giftings lie, and Paul, in this account, helps propel us to use them alongside other gifts people have. If we are to take that secondary perspective and to look at where we are, perhaps we could ask questions about: Where do I place myself within the team? Have there been instances of good working chemistry and dynamics with my fellow players? Is there something I need to let go of in order to allow others to create chances for the squad?

God is always in the business not just of looking into our own hearts but also into how God’s work can be shown in community. A community that roots for each other and wants to lift people up to take on their calling that God gives to them.

Prayer:

Loving God, we know that as a coach you don’t look to individual physical prowess but rather you call us to lock in with a spirit that is common to all, and which lifts all. Enable us to see where bridges can be built - to strive for working towards a common unity. Let us have fresh eyes during the game of life to see where you open doors and enable your people to show your love and grace in miraculous ways. Amen.
