Luke 21: 29–33 (NIV)

29 He told them this parable: ‘Look at the fig-tree and all the trees. 30 When they sprout leaves, you can see for yourselves and know that summer is near. 31 Even so, when you see these things happening, you know that the kingdom of God is near.

32 ‘Truly I tell you, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened. 33 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.

All week I have been imagining Jesus working on a concept album and at this point I’m picturing Jesus walking with the disciples as they comment on the trees they pass. I’m picturing Jesus listening to his friends gripe and complain, as humans do, about how long summer is taking to arrive. I think Jesus would see things differently, he perhaps would look at the trees and not see a disappointment but living things brimming with potential, leaves ready to sprout.

Before they have time to fit in another comment on the weather the friends and disciples of Jesus might find their feet moving and their bodies swaying as track 5 comes into being: a dance anthem for the summer which is to come.

Wake up, it seems to say, wake up and see the potential, see that summer is coming, that the Kingdom is coming, open your eyes and see. At this point I smile to imagine a camper van pulling up beside them, mixing and sampling deck at the ready to bring out the full potential of this summer anthem. So they stop complaining and dance, they let their bodies flow and the music grow within them. Little do they know that as time goes on and they find themselves humming the tune all summer they will be learning to open their eyes to the potential all around them, to what will be and to a hope that grows and grows with the tapping of feet.

Prayer:

Dear God of stories and rhythms

Thank you that our minds can find truths in your words long after we have heard them

Help us to welcome your truth into our minds and your hope into our bodies.

Amen
