Psalm 105:1-6, 16-22, 45b (NIV-UK)

1 Give praise to the Lord, proclaim his name;
    make known among the nations what he has done.
2 Sing to him, sing praise to him;
    tell of all his wonderful acts.
3 Glory in his holy name;
    let the hearts of those who seek the Lord rejoice.
4 Look to the Lord and his strength;
    seek his face always.

5 Remember the wonders he has done,
    his miracles, and the judgments he pronounced,
6 you his servants, the descendants of Abraham,
    his chosen ones, the children of Jacob.

16 He called down famine on the land
    and destroyed all their supplies of food;
17 and he sent a man before them –
    Joseph, sold as a slave.

Praise the Lord.

I have been a residential community member at Scargill House for sixteen years. I am part of the group of people who tell the lived experience of the resurrected community. Originally established in 1959 it closed in 2008 and re-opened in 2009. At the restart there was a real sense of pioneering, the daily reality of hard work amongst uncertainty and risk of whether the hospitality led work would be financially viable.

In June we celebrated the work and witness of the couple who came to lead the new Community back in 2010, on the occasion of their retirement. We witnessed to tangible evidence of God’s miraculous provision, seeking to keep God’s generosity in mind as we walk forward into a new phase of the life of Scargill Community. Sadness and thankfulness sit together at moments like these, as relationships are redefined.

The Scargill community, as a group of Jesus followers, walks on giving thanks to God and all those who have lived, prayed, sacrificed, given and blessed the work of our hands through things such as favour with building planning authorities, biomass boiler schemes, financial gifts and loans along with the presence and prayers of many guests over the years.

At our celebration gatherings many stories were shared of laughter-making moments, poignant encounters and significant friendships formed. I wonder what stories you share when you meet within your communities of faith – stories about the miraculous provision of God through people and resources?
