How lovely on the mountains

Romans 10: 14-17

14 But how are they to call on one in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in one of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone to proclaim him? 15 And how are they to proclaim him unless they are sent? As it is written, ‘How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!’ 16 But not all have obeyed the good news; for Isaiah says, ‘Lord, who has believed our message?’ 17 So faith comes from what is heard, and what is heard comes through the word of Christ.

Reading the diary of Samuel Pepys which is freely available online you cannot help but be struck by how much of a gossip he is. In the absence of formal media news gets to him from his breakfast companions, his fellows at supper, the people he chances on in the street and with whom he shares a boat across the Thames or a carriage ride.

The substance of these conversations may be great or trifling but when taken together they give us a real insight of how history unfolds. The greatest evangelical campaigns and stadium rallies are wonderful, but the real work is done when people gossip the Gospel.

Gracious God

Make us quick to gossip about you.

Make our gossip kind and positive

Make our gossip full of positive promise

Let us instead of bringing down time and place and person

Build up the kingdom

May our lives be small sermons

Little expositions

The scripture unfolded

The good news spread

Amen.
