Psalm 121 (NRSVA)

1 I lift up my eyes to the hills—
    from where will my help come?
2 My help comes from the Lord,
    who made heaven and earth.

3 He will not let your foot be moved;
    he who keeps you will not slumber.
4 He who keeps Israel
    will neither slumber nor sleep.

5 The Lord is your keeper;
    the Lord is your shade at your right hand.
6 The sun shall not strike you by day,
    nor the moon by night.

7 The Lord will keep you from all evil;
    he will keep your life.
8 The Lord will keep
    your going out and your coming in
    from this time on and for evermore.

All journeys start with a single step; but of course all journeys taken on foot through rough and ready terrain will include steps that are a little less sure than maybe that first step was.

It is silly to head out on a journey and think that because you know that the end is secure that the travel itself will be easy. No matter the great promise of what can come from God we know that the ups and downs of life, the muddy paths and the driving rain, can make it all feel a waste of time or not worth the effort.

The psalmist reminds us that a journey of faith, traveling through life is not devoid of challenge, but encourages us to remember that even in the muck the promise of shelter has been made and our hope to be lifted from the mud is found in God.

PRAYER:

God,
Help me be prepared to continue on a journey of faith.
Help me to look to you in faith when the path is muddy and hope is slipping.
God,
Help me keep on sure in the hope of your shelter.
Amen.

The Transforming Shelter: Think about your local area/town/city and reflect on the people living around who could be struggling or suffering, who perhaps can’t rely on their shelter or accommodation. Commit to pray for your neighbourhood and those same people every day this week.
