Honey for sorrow

Psalm 19: 7-10 (NRSVA)

7 The law of the Lord is perfect,
    reviving the soul;
the decrees of the Lord are sure,
    making wise the simple;
8 the precepts of the Lord are right,
    rejoicing the heart;
the commandment of the Lord is clear,
    enlightening the eyes;
9 the fear of the Lord is pure,
    enduring for ever;
the ordinances of the Lord are true
    and righteous altogether.
10 More to be desired are they than gold,
    even much fine gold;
sweeter also than honey,
    and drippings of the honeycomb.

Honey, gold spun from blossom to blossom
soft catching light on breeze from seasons past
a treasure found in amongst free flotsam
a year, unfurled, awakes — breaking its fast.

Small promises aloft upon wing beats
reassuring us that life tastes of hope
gently, that bitterness is not complete
a sweetness sharp, affords a means to cope.

A perfect law sung out amidst brambles
of simple tawny goodness, golden, bright
hidden through thorn and cut, shred and shambles
through the needling, piercing and dying light.

But my heart, stirred to arias unknown,
follows to the letter — sweet honeycomb.

PRAYER:

Lord,
Bring us further and further into life.
Amen.

Act — To put God’s love into action in your life what is something sweet you could do for someone today? Maybe not the first person you think of, cast the net a little wider and see who comes to mind.
