Psalm 27: 11-12 (NRSVA)

11

Teach me your way, O Lord,
and lead me on a level path
    because of my enemies.

12

Do not give me up to the will of my adversaries,
for false witnesses have risen against me,
and they are breathing out violence.

I have always said that it is all very well God having a map of my life but I do wish God would give me a few pointers. Maybe a neon sign or two. Even the odd timely roadblock.

I think of God sitting in a big armchair, the Spirit and Jesus on each arm all looking at an outrageously large map that it takes three of them to hold. Then I like to imagine me joining them, squishing in and taking a look at my next path. I wonder what I would see? Perhaps more stumbles than I’d like, but also more peaks and viewpoints than I expected.

I know I would point at a shortcut and they would smile lovingly, knowing I was not ready yet. But they would also show me a route that I didn’t think I could manage and assure me I was strong enough.

What path would you and they be looking at together?

Try to imagine it this week, as we walk further into a new year filled with unknown possibilities.

Prayer:

Dear God of life orienteering

Thank you that you can recalculate our route with us

Thank you that you are creative in your route setting

Help us to anticipate what we will need for the path we embark on

Guide us to the end with your grace

Amen
