Proverbs 16: 24 (NIVUK)

24 Gracious words are a honeycomb,
sweet to the soul and healing to the bones.

“Emmanuel,” the name means ‘God with us’. Can we ever imagine what that really means? One thing is for certain — it says God is not against us. God is not seeking to trip us up. God is not wagging his finger at us. When God is seen as a judge in the Bible often it is in the context of a judge/probation officer.

When God gives a judgement it’s to enable us to change, to be reformed. He is not a distant judge far removed from us. These words reveal the true nature of God. He is here with us in all our struggles and failures In all our worries and anxieties. To know he is with us is healing in itself and is like sweet music in our ears. He comes along side us to transform our hearts. This truly is the essence of the Christmas message. God walking alongside us saying “This is the way walk in it” The light shines in the darkness and the darkness cannot put it out. God is not afraid of our dark moments and scary corners.

Advent Action:

Think of someone who perhaps God is calling you to walk alongside this coming year. No longer judging them, but gently walking by their side, perhaps giving them a nudge in the right direction?

PRAYER:

Lord,
When I’m angry and full of fear
You are with me you are there by my side

When I’m doubting and full of uncertainty
You are with me you are there by my side

When I’m crying and full of regret
You are with me you are there by my side

When I’m praying and full of expectation
You are with me you are there by my side

When I’m rejoicing and full of hope
You are with me you are there by my side

When I’m thankful that all is well
You are with me you are there by my side

Lord,
Look my mouth is wide open…
And I have still got more Christmas to open up!
It’s amazing!
