Acts 2: 42-47 (NRSVA)

42 They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers.

43 Awe came upon everyone, because many wonders and signs were being done by the apostles. 44 All who believed were together and had all things in common; 45 they would sell their possessions and goods and distribute the proceeds to all, as any had need. 46 Day by day, as they spent much time together in the temple, they broke bread at home and ate their food with glad and generous hearts, 47 praising God and having the goodwill of all the people. And day by day the Lord added to their number those who were being saved.

This week we have journeyed through the theme of Passover and Supper. Within and through that journey, we have witnessed the supper in different places, different times, and different settings.

This is a meal which is not any use when it is contained in four walls. The power of the Lord’s Supper, and in the Passover before it, was that it went out with power in the world. Look at this chapter of Acts for yourself.

Notice the special place of the meal alongside teaching and fellowship
Notice how the first Christian church broke bread at home.

The next time you celebrate the Lord's Supper together at your church, or here on Sanctuary First, remember its origins. It is a meal that had gone out from an upper room with Christ and his disciples, into the streets, and countrysides across the middle east. It has then travelled to the great cities of the Roman Empire, up through Europe, across Asia, down into Africa, over into the Americas. It is a meal passed down from Christ himself, through 80 saintly generations.

PRAYER:

Lord,
We delight in the supper
We delight in sharing together
with glad and sincere hearts.
Help us honour you
Help us praise you
Help us dedicate ourselves
and devote ourselves
to your teaching,
to fellowship
and to breaking of bread and prayer
for your Glory.

Amen.
