Luke 6: 46-49 (NRSVA)

46 ‘Why do you call me “Lord, Lord”, and do not do what I tell you? 47 I will show you what someone is like who comes to me, hears my words, and acts on them. 48 That one is like a man building a house, who dug deeply and laid the foundation on rock; when a flood arose, the river burst against that house but could not shake it, because it had been well built. 49 But the one who hears and does not act is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. When the river burst against it, immediately it fell, and great was the ruin of that house.’

This week we are reading passages in Luke through the eyes of Joanna one of Jesus’s supporters and followers.

JOANNA:

“Like everyone who heard Jesus talking about strong foundations, I hope I will always find myself building on rock. People have accused me of being under the spell of the wandering rabbi. One old friend as near as suggested I joined a cult. As if she hadn’t been standing next to me when I first heard Jesus’s wisdom, as if I hadn’t given her a detailed account of the way he healed me inside and out. She has known me all this time but the change in me, my happiness is too much for her and so she dismisses it. His words are too challenging for her so she ignores them.

I hope she comes around one day. I won’t push things on her but perhaps those words of Jesus’s are sitting tucked away in her mind and heart for the day she is ready to hear them and come meet the man who cares for all.”

PRAYER:

Dear God of all

Thank you that you bring words of love and acceptance to all

Please help those who hear but do not accept

Lead each person, believer or unbeliever to a truer version of love

through you to whom all are equally worth loving

Amen
