The prison of unforgiveness

Matthew 6:9-14

“This then is how you should pray:
“Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come, your will be done
on earth, as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
Forgive us our debts,
As we also have forgiven our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation,
But deliver us from the evil one”.

“For if you forgive men when they sin against you
Your heavenly Father will also forgive you.
But if you do not forgive men their sins,
Your Father will not forgive your sins.”

Song:

I’m accepted, I’m forgiven
I am fathered by the true and living God
I’m accepted, no condemnation
I am loved by the true and living God
(Ron Hayward)

Prayer

I can’t forgive them Lord
Don’t you realize what they did?
It was not right or fair
The pain is too much to bear
I can’t just let them off the hook
They deserve punishment
I deserve justice

I know it happened a while ago
And time has passed
But they have not suffered enough yet
I refuse to forgive them
I’m just waiting for you to move
To let them have it

You can see my pain, my resolve, my silence
And yet I seem to be the one in prison
I am the one struggling to put this behind me
They don’t seem to care
Or be particularly bothered by my indifference
This punishment of silence is not what I expected
I am the one wrapped up and bound by this thing

I hear your words speaking to me over and over
Your voice full of pain, and betrayal by a friend
“Father forgive them, for they know not what they do”
How could you, they do not deserve your forgiveness
And then I realize…….neither do I!
