Matthew 9:35 – 10:1

Jesus went through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and sickness. When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.”

Jesus Sends Out the Twelve

Jesus called his twelve disciples to him and gave them authority to drive out impure spirits and to heal every disease and sickness.

King of the nations, Lord of all,

You are enthroned in heavenly glory.

Your majesty radiates throughout the universe.

Yet you have compassion on us,

because we are harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.

We are unable to do what needs to be done:

the task is too big, too hard, too expensive.

We each feel so alone.

Why should we each sacrifice our time, our talents, our treasure?

Why not them? Why not ‘us’? Why me?

Lord, you lead by example.

The mission is yours, not ours.

Your yoke is easy, your burden is light.

You give us the resources to do our part.

Lord, grant us the faith to lean on you,

to make ourselves available to your guidance,

to be aware of where you are already working.

All for the praise of your glorious name.

Amen.
