Focus my eyes

Martin Fair May 15, 2015 0 0

Acts 1:10

They were looking intently up into the sky as he was going, when suddenly two men dressed in white stood beside them.

Reflect on Matthew 14:27-33

But Jesus immediately said to them: “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.”

28 “Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.”

29 “Come,” he said.

Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. 30 But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!”

31 Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?”

32 And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down. 33 Then those who were in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.”

Lord, the scripture tells us that, after Jesus had been taken from them, the disciples stood with their 'eyes fixed on the sky.'

We pray that, by your Spirit, we might have our eyes fixed on Jesus.

And yet we are all too aware that this life is full of distractions - so many moments and happenings which have the result of taking our attention away from Jesus.

Help us, we pray to:
Focus my eyes on you, O Lord,
Focus my eyes on you;
Focus my eyes on you, O Lord,
Focus my eyes on you.*

As we focus our eyes on you, let us see more clearly what you are doing in our world.
As we focus our eyes on you, let us hear more clearly what you are saying to us.
As we focus our eyes on you, let us see more clearly how you would have us serve you in the world.
As we focus our eyes on you, let us hear more clearly your call upon our lives.

Keep us Lord from staring into the void - from looking for you in all of the wrong places. Might we come to see you where you really are and so find you, not least kneeling at our feet.

In Jesus' name, we pray, Amen.
