John 16: 12-15 (NRSVA)

12 ‘I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. 13 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth; for he will not speak on his own, but will speak whatever he hears, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. 14 He will glorify me, because he will take what is mine and declare it to you. 15 All that the Father has is mine. For this reason I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.

I was visualising this encounter between Jesus and His disciples and I wondered what might have been said that wasn’t recorded by John…

PETER:

‘What on earth are you talking about Jesus?!! For three years we have followed you, lived with you, protected you from the masses, watched you cast out demons, heal sick people, resurrect dead people, welcome marginalised people, and argue with religious leaders. Surely, we can handle anything you need to say to us?'

JESUS:

‘You must wait, because although I have told you many times what lies ahead, you refuse to hear.

You must wait, because despite my example, you still think the Messiah is going to restore the fortunes of Israel and remove the Roman oppressors.

You must wait, for the path you walk now is steeped in fear, but soon your path will be marked, “suffering, sorrow and doubt.”

But be confident that I will send the Holy Spirit to you to remind you that you belong to Me, I am walking with you on that difficult path, and you too will be raised up with me.’

PRAYER:

Loving God, mostly I don’t understand Your ways, but I am convinced that no matter what I face this new day, Your Spirit faces it with me, in me and for me… thank You. Amen.

LENT FOCUS 3: PATHS

This week we are thinking about paths. A reflective activity you could try this week is getting a piece of paper and drawing an outline around each of your feet. Reflect on the past year of your life and the year ahead. In one foot outline write some of the places you’ve been with God in the past year and then on the the other foot you could write about where you are going to be with God in the year ahead.
