Luke 19: 36-40 (NRSVA)

36 As he rode along, people kept spreading their cloaks on the road. 37 As he was now approaching the path down from the Mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to praise God joyfully with a loud voice for all the deeds of power that they had seen, 38 saying,

‘Blessed is the king
who comes in the name of the Lord!
Peace in heaven,
and glory in the highest heaven!’

39 Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to him, ‘Teacher, order your disciples to stop.’ 40 He answered, ‘I tell you, if these were silent, the stones would shout out.’

I completed a pilgrimage along the West Highland Way in June this year, and as I walked I invited God to speak to me through the path, my surroundings, and the people I met along the Way.

Perhaps unsurprisingly there were many stones littering the paths, also huge beautiful, majestic mountains which spoke to me of God’s creativity, enduring presence and majesty by the sides of the way — but it was the smaller well worn stones trampled into the path underfoot which often caught my eyes, and which made their way into my pockets…

And the wonder of it really was the shape of them…

They were heart shaped!

Heart-stoppingly heart shaped. To begin with it was surprising, but by the end I was looking for them, and was more surprised if I didn’t see one!

Those heart shaped stones spoke to me loudest of all, that I was surrounded by God’s love, and that even although I was alone on a path I was surrounded by the solid rock of God’s presence and love, and that love was quite literally forming the path beneath my feet.

Love,

The foundation of our being,

A gift from God to us,

Arms wide,

Welcoming us in,

Leading us on,

The path to life.

Love,

Redeeming,

Forgiving,

Restoring,

Making new,

Making all things new.

Love,

An action, not a feeling,

A choice, not a given.

From us to another,

Kingdom birthing.

Always Kingdom birthing!

Desire of my heart,

Our hearts find their homes in you,

Your transforming love softens them, mends them and fills them…

Teach us Lord, how to let our filled hearts overflow,

Show us how to be extravagant with our love in the ways that you are with yours.

That we might be hearts in the lives of others, crying out your love, proclaiming your presence in this stoney world.

In Jesus’ name, Amen
