1 Corinthians 10: 13

13 Every test that you have experienced is the kind that normally comes to people. But God keeps his promise, and he will not allow you to be tested beyond your power to remain firm; at the time you are put to the test, he will give you the strength to endure it, and so provide you with a way out.

In the most recent novel I've read, "The Mysterious Disappearance of Adele Bedeau" by Graeme Macrae Burnet, there is a defining moment in which the main suspect, Manfred, tells a lie to the investigating detective Gorski.

Once it's done he sees no way of going back and continues with the lie which has downward spiralling consequences for him. "His course had been set since the first time he had spoken to Gorski. He could hardly change tack now." It's like Manfred purposely and permanently locks the exit door.

With freewill and the grace of God there is always a way out, a means of using our freewill fruitfully. Change is always possible.

Prayer:

Help me, O Lord, to remain close to you in every test,

making choices which enable me to remain true to myself but firm in my faith.

Even when I think I've got things all sorted out - give me flexibility in my thinking, keep me close to you and open to the truth of your Word.

In the midst of a present reality where I don't know what to do, where to go, remind me that you can provide the strength for me to endure it and a way out.

Give me the patience of Job in troubling times.
