Psalm 81: 10 (NIVUK)

10 I am the Lord your God,
who brought you up out of Egypt.
Open wide your mouth and I will fill it.

This verse of the psalm, “Open wide your moukeeping his promise to fill the mouths of the children of Israel when they were going hungry in the desert. This also brings to mind the promise of Jesus to his disciples, when he said don’t worry about what you will say when you are brought before kings and rulers. To explain yourselves —
open your mouth and I will put the words in it. Well, that’s it paraphrased (see Luke 12: 11). I think Jesus is saying if you have a tendency to overthink things, when it comes to bearing witness to me just open your mouth go with the flow and I will fill it with the right words.

Advent Action:

Could this Advent be the time you stopped worrying about what you’re going to say to a particular person about a specific issue when you meet up with them next? When the time comes you could open your mouth gracefully and let God do the talking. This was surely one of the lessons we learned from reading the story of Balaam and his donkey.

PRAYER:

Father God.
Thank you for all the good things in our lives
For our faces
Our expressions and emotions
Our eyes
Our ears,
Our mouths
Mouths that express so many feelings
Mouths that contain our breathing
Opening us up to the breath of your Spirit — giving us life
Reflecting your image

Son of the Father
Child of the manger
Thank you
For the enjoyment of food
For our lips
that open in awe and wonder,
that open to yawn with tiredness
that open when no words can express how we feel
For the gift of communication
And the legacy of love
That sustains us at all times

Spirit proceeding from the Father and the Son
Thank you
You enable us to speak well of all people
To speak truthfully
With compassion and understanding
To share our love unsparingly with joy and gladness
To receive with gratitude and kindness the love of others

Father Son and holy Spirit
Give us the nerve
To open our mouths
When we need to speak well of someone
When others would seek to bring them down
And give us the determination
Never to falter for fear of ridicule or rejection
