Courage in the face of war

December 02, 2014 0 0

Psalm 77: 7-13

7 “Will the Lord reject forever?
    Will he never show his favor again?
8 Has his unfailing love vanished forever?
    Has his promise failed for all time?
9 Has God forgotten to be merciful?
    Has he in anger withheld his compassion?”

10 Then I thought, “To this I will appeal:
    the years when the Most High stretched out his right hand.
11 I will remember the deeds of the Lord;
    yes, I will remember your miracles of long ago.
12 I will consider all your works
    and meditate on all your mighty deeds.”

13 Your ways, God, are holy.
    What god is as great as our God?

Song (based on Psalm 13)

How long, O Lord, must this grief possess my heart?
How long, O Lord, must I languish night and day?
How long, O Lord, shall my enemy oppress?
How long, how long, O Lord?

Prayer

Courageous God,
walk with us who live with war, or the threat of war;
weep with us whose children wake in terror in the night,
    scared of bullets; petrified by pain; afraid to the core, of a grim death;
keen and wail with us who grieve over each human heart
    shattered, destroyed, torn apart, stopped in the grip of war;
rage with us over visions trampled, dreams destroyed.

And then, dear Lord, still our racing souls;
bring us back to the deep, impatient,
courageous love
which overcomes all fear.

Amen.
