Commit to your way

Mark 6:8

These were his instructions: "Take nothing for the journey except a staff--no bread, no bag, no money in your belts.”

These were his instructions: "Take nothing for the journey except a staff--no bread, no bag, no money in your belts.”

I’d never cope!  Not even cabin-sized baggage is allowed!
What are the things we have that we feel are so important we cannot possibly leave home without them?
Make a mental list.
Or even better, try to get through today with nothing at all in your pockets and see what it is that you miss.

When we make a commitment to journey with Christ, we make that commitment not relying on our own resources, but on his.  At least, that’s what we’re supposed to do.
How many of us though, want to be in control of what we do, where we go and what we’re about?  How many of us want to choose who accompanies us on that journey?
I suspect it’s human nature, but it still misses the point.  The journey is not about what we can do – it’s about what God can do – and it’s about what he can do in us, through us and despite us.

I think I know…
I think I can sort…
I think I can get by…

You know
You sort
You’re the one who carries me…

I want you to lead -
But I act like I know the way…

I want you to be my guide -
But then I assume control and set off where I want to go…

You call me to journey with all your people –
But I select the few who agree with me…

Help me to commit to your journey, Lord Jesus –
The one that leads me places I wouldn’t ordinarily choose
And that calls me to walk beside those I wouldn’t ordinarily fall in step with…
Help me to commit to your way
Not mine.
