Called to build

Jeremiah 1:9-10

Then the Lord put out his hand and touched my mouth; and the Lord said to me,
“Now I have put my words in your mouth.
See, today I appoint you over nations and over kingdoms,
to pluck up and to pull down,
to destroy and to overthrow,
to build and to plant.”

Breaking, tearing down,
Reshaping, rebuilding
O Lord, why would we stick with that kind of programme
when there are so many quick fixes around?
Why would we pitch in for the long haul
when we can have instant gratification?
Deep down, we know your ways make sense.
We know your ways are right.
But they are harder and take longer to pursue.
And the gains don't appear anytime soon.
God, keep us open to signs in our everyday
that remind us that you are faithful
and everlasting
and that you stick with us
through thick and thin.
And, when we wander off to find satisfaction elsewhere
help us to know that you wait patiently for our return.
