Luke 13: 20-21 (NRSVA)

20 And again he said, ‘To what should I compare the kingdom of God? 21 It is like yeast that a woman took and mixed in with three measures of flour until all of it was leavened.’

This week we are reading passages in Luke through the eyes of Joanna one of Jesus’s supporters and followers.

JOANNA:

"Jesus always used the conversations he had with friends and people he met on the road to embellish his teaching. He really is creative and it works. He talks about sheep and shepherds like he has been one and here too he uses a chat he had with some of us women on the road with him to teach people about God’s kingdom.

It makes people listen. Whoever you are you’ve had bread. Almost every woman listening to Jesus, those who are so often left outside of the attention of other rabbis, has made bread just like this. He even remembered the measures.

It really means something to know he was listening when we talked and it makes me smile to hear our chatter created into a lesson beyond my expectations. It works though, I know what I’m going to be thinking of when I next make bread.”

PRAYER:

Dear God of listening

Thank you that you hear us truly and deeply

Be with us in our lives whatever they may contain

Create in us ways to live your kingdom

and remember your wisdom as we go about our days.

Amen
