1 Peter 5: 6-7 (NRSVA)

6 Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, so that he may exalt you in due time. 7 Cast all your anxiety on him, because he cares for you.

Being humble is not about thinking less of ourselves, it is about thinking of ourselves less. This doesn’t come naturally to most people — we have to work at it, especially in our day when advertisers tell us that it’s ‘all about us’ about our needs and wellbeing. Yes, self-care is essential, especially if we hold leadership. When we have perspective though, it is much easier to think of ourselves less.

Seeing ourselves as God sees us is imperative to this, and I believe that when God looks at us, He looks at us with immeasurable love. It’s rather like when we look at a baby – who doesn’t smile when they look at a baby?! We even make hilarious noises as we talk with them, make weird faces as we peer at them – imagine if we behaved this way with our peers?!

Glimpsing our worth and wonder in Christ will free us up to delight in the worth and wonder of others and we will rejoice in their gifts and service. When we live free of fear we live in love, in Divine Love which assures and reassures us repeatedly, that no matter what we face we do not face it alone. Ask yourself today, “how does God look at me, who and what does God see?” Then ask yourself about how you see yourself… is there a difference? Trust that God sees His beloved son, His beloved daughter, and humbly give thanks for His delight in you.

PRAYER:

Loving God, thank You for delighting in me, help me to humbly accept Your generous love and to humbly serve those around me. In the Name of Christ our Lord, Amen.
