Luke 24: 28-29 (NRSVA)

28 As they came near the village to which they were going, he walked ahead as if he were going on. 29 But they urged him strongly, saying, ‘Stay with us, because it is almost evening and the day is now nearly over.’ So he went in to stay with them.

There comes a time in every program of divine encounter, when God makes as if to leave – and one might think that God has many other people, other situations on his heart. We find it’s our turn: God has left his questions and her clues with us, and we sense what happens next may really matter, however small the step we take.

The two companions, Cleopas (and Simon the ex-Zealot in Owen Dudley Edward’s novel Saint Johnny) took that step of faith and hospitality – and Jesus stayed to have a meal with them. God programmed that event of risen presence in the person of Jesus, who planted himself wild in a domestic setting.

Prayer:

Father God, may your Spirit grow the gift of hospitality within our lives, that we may welcome Jesus and all his friends, that our faith may mature and bear fruit, that we become ready for what is next to be revealed, through Jesus Christ, wild challenger and gentle guest, Amen.
