A THANKSGIVING PRAYER FOR A CHILD’S BIRTHDAY

Psalm 118:24

This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.

[This is a ‘join-in blessing’ – for a girl or boy who is seven.
It can be adapted for any age up to ten.]

 

S/he started at none;
But then s/he was one.
S/he wriggled and grew
Until she was two.
After which - you'll agree -
S/he just had to be three.
It was twelve months before
S/he made it to four.
When five - so I'm told -
S/he was sixty months old.
The clock tick-tock-ticks...
And soon s/he is six.
S/he’ll be seven a whole year...
So we give a big cheer! 
And then came the date
When s/he made it ...to eight 
We added two lines
When s/he joined with the nines 
And now ten is the score,
We hope for lots more!

And so. Lord. we pray -
On this fabulous day -
May a life well begun -
In faith, hope and fun -
Keep growing in knowing
Your love in full measure,
As birthdays bring pleasure 
Again and again;
AND WE ALL SAY  [loudly] ‘AMEN’.
