A prayer of wisdom

Listen to this daily worship
1 Timothy 6: 6-10 (NIV)
6 But godliness with contentment is great gain. 7 For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. 8 But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that. 9 Those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. 10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.
Lord, when I consider the world today
I feel aghast at the accumulation of vast wealth by some
while others starve.
I rail against the unfairness of our current systems
which reward greed and selfishness
rather than altruism and empathy.
Your call to love my neighbour,
when my neighbour is anyone with whom I share this planet,
seems impossible when I see the pain inflicted by the powerful on the powerless.
What does it mean to love those who wantonly inflict pain on others,
sometimes in the name of religion,
who are nevertheless still your children?
Give me grace to see all people through your eyes, I pray.
Give me the humility to acknowledge
that I am not immune to the sins of greed and selfishness.
Help me to open my life more fully to your spirit
that I may find contentment in what I have,
greater love for all people,
and wisdom to know how better to respond
to the challenges of living in these times, Amen
