It’s easy to forget that the people in the time of Jesus were desperately poor. There was no Benefits system if the subsistence crop failed, and the various taxes and tolls were never reduced only increased! So, when someone asks Jesus to solve their family’s inheritance problems it would be easy to assume that because land is owned there is wealth.
Jesus is not our own personal ‘Fixer' nor is He our ‘Superhero’ swooping in to rescue us from whatever evil befalls us! No, Jesus trusts us to share as He shared, to care for others as He cared, to be wise enough to know that ‘stuff’ does not define our worth — so then, how are you defining your worth today?
Each grain of sand You have created.
Each star in the sky You have created.
Each cell in our body You have created.
Your generosity is beyond limit, help us to be like You. Amen.
13 Someone in the crowd said to him, ‘Teacher, tell my brother to divide the family inheritance with me.’ 14 But he said to him, ‘Friend, who set me to be a judge or arbitrator over you?’ 15 And he said to them, ‘Take care! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of possessions.’
