Proverbs 9: 1-6 (NRSVA)

1 Wisdom has built her house,
she has hewn her seven pillars.
2 She has slaughtered her animals, she has mixed her wine,
she has also set her table.
3 She has sent out her servant-girls, she calls
from the highest places in the town,
4 ‘You that are simple, turn in here!’
To those without sense she says,
5 ‘Come, eat of my bread
and drink of the wine I have mixed.
6 Lay aside immaturity, and live,
and walk in the way of insight.’

Have you ever dreamed of having wisdom, just like Solomon did in the reading at the  start of our week? Whether you are in need of wisdom throughout your whole life or just to help you through a certain situation, wisdom can be something we dream of knowing.

How easy then would it be if she could simply invite you round for dinner.

It’s a classic Bible situation, one Jesus is often the instigator of in the gospels: a thing you dream of is not only suddenly within reach, but it comes with a friendly face and offering you a meal and a chat.

As Solomon found when he dreamed of wisdom, it can be a serious thing, a holy thing, a thing which must be chosen instead of other things. But as Jesus and Wisdom herself show us: wisdom sometimes knows how to party.

PRAYER

Dear God of welcome,

Invite us in to your table and feed us your wisdom.

Help us to bear that wisdom with the honour it requires but with the lightness that you have taught us.

For our own sakes God, please offer us welcome and wisdom even when we are not asking for it.

Amen
