Psalm 46 (NIV)

1

God is our refuge and strength,
    an ever-present help in trouble.

Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way
    and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea,

though its waters roar and foam
    and the mountains quake with their surging.

There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God,
    the holy place where the Most High dwells.

God is within her, she will not fall;
    God will help her at break of day.

Nations are in uproar, kingdoms fall;
    he lifts his voice, the earth melts.

The Lord Almighty is with us;
    the God of Jacob is our fortress.

Come and see what the Lord has done,
    the desolations he has brought on the earth.

He makes wars cease
    to the ends of the earth.
He breaks the bow and shatters the spear;
    he burns the shields with fire.

10

He says, “Be still, and know that I am God;
    I will be exalted among the nations,
    I will be exalted in the earth.”

11

The Lord Almighty is with us;
    the God of Jacob is our fortress.

After singing about grief and redemption, in our first two tracks this week, I like to imagine Jesus would turn to a good dance with his friends for some feel good tunes. Enter Psalm 46, the pop track on the album.

For every disaster the psalm names (and there are a few) there is a reason to be glad, a reason to dance, and a reason to trust God has got it handled. The song barrels through sadness and sings out hope, with a catchy tune to boot.

Jesus knows the power and importance of hope and friendship, of making time for celebration and dancing. He is after all enjoying time as a human being, with feet that need to move and a voice that needs to sing and laugh and smile, at least some of the time.

Jesus spent time around scholars and knows how easy it is for humans to get stuck in a ‘head only mindset’, forgetting to give the rest of our bodies what they need. He knows how easy it is to let the world get us down and forget to find the hope we need to keep going.

So I like to think he could turn to the psalms and delight in singing lyrics like ‘God is within her, she will not fall; God will help her at break of day.’ Then watch with glee as his friends spun their bodies with joy as his hands plucked out a tune that they would be singing for years after, rooting the hope deep in their minds and bodies all at once.

Prayer:

Dear God of dancing feet

Thank you that you see us and love us

Remind us to look up when all we can see is despair

Keep our feet moving despite our heavy heads

Amen
