Blessed are the pure in heart

September 26, 2016 0 0

Mathew 5: 8-10

Blessed are the pure in heart,
    for they will see God.
9 Blessed are the peacemakers,
for they will be called children of God.
10 Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Father,

We realise a bridge builder or a peacemaker cannot function properly when there are unresolved conflicts, personal agendas or needs driven policies, which can undermine or corrupt even our best intentions. Neither can we bring peace to others, when there is the rest-lessness of mixed motives, or the impurity of selfishness in our own hearts.
As Psalm 51 says, "Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me."

This then is our hearts cry to you O Lord.
Purify our hearts, our motives and our dealings,
lest we seek to minister the ways of the Spirit by using the means of the flesh,
and simply replace one tyranny with another.
Yet, this cannot simply be a glib request, as we recognise that purity costs,
and the process can be painful, as old ways are often burned away.
We recognise too, that the most tender hearts are often those which have been broken.
Help us then not to shrink from the cost or the transition,
but make us anew into a people of character and compassion,
who will indeed "Do justly, love mercy and walk humbly with our God", in Jesus name.

Amen
