As one who is free

1 Samuel 22: 1-2

David left Gath and escaped to the cave of Adullam. When his brothers and his father’s household heard about it, they went down to him there. All those who were in distress or in debt or discontented gathered round him, and he became their commander. About four hundred men were with him.

Act…

The church can, and does, have a role in helping people with debt repayment (by consolidating the debt of congregation members to make repayment cheaper), through helping people access debt counselling,  by lobbying against exploitative practices – and by teaching good stewardship.

For starters ask what others are doing or see http://www.church-poverty.org.uk/

O Lord,
There is no greed or grasping with you
There is no new car or latest clothes
You, who had no place to rest your head,
You, who took no notice of trends and tweets
You, who put aside your majesty
And paid our debt so we could be free

Help me to live as one who is free
To be content with all you have given
To live in the moment without debt to tomorrow
To break through the mirage of comfortable living
To reassess what is really of worth
To live a life as one who is free.

Help open my eyes to others around
To see those in distress and in debt
To walk with the discontented
To fight for those who have lost all hope
To be like David, a refuge for all.

To live a life as one who is free.

Amen
